A goal in 10 minutes from a Carl Finnigan header was all that separated the teams, and for the majority of the match that was a fair reflection on the play. Certainly in the first half, Falkirk dominated, and always seemed to have an extra player available to shut down any Killie creativity.

From Falkirk's point of view, if not Kilmarnock's, the goal was a good one. Scott Arfield speared in a terrific cross from the left, and Finnigan got in front of the defence with the deftest of head flicks to beat Alan Combe. Trying to get Killie back into the game, David Fernandez was trying almost too hard, and despite one effort that nearly put Colin Nish in on goal, and a shot over the bar, it was no surprise when he was replaced at the break by new signing Alan Morgan.
The second half was better, as Killie reacted to what had obviously been a robust team talk, and Falkirk found that they didn't have anything like as much space as previously. A Hamill cross was just missed by the in-rushing Nish, and an Invincibile drive was well saved by Krul low to his right. Then it was Hamill's turn to volley wide, before Frazer Wright headed a Wales cross past when he should have hit the target. Invincibile did have the ball in the net but Colin Nish had strayed off-side, and as it looked as if Falkirk would see the game out quietly, all hell broke loose.

Jamie Hamill lashed in a shot from 20 yards, and as Krul held, or didn't quite hold, the drive, Frazer Wright challenged the keeper. In the blink of an eye, 21 players were pushing and jostling in the Falkirk goal-mouth, and the referee and referee's assistant were vainly trying to haul them apart. When order was finally restored, Frazer Wright was red-carded, Tim Krul was red-carded, and then the keeper, who had previously also been cautioned, had to be carried off on a stretcher as he was apparently unable to make the four yards under his own steam. Substitute Russell Latapy was then himself subbed to bring on reserve keeper Olejnik, to see out the last couple of minutes of overtime.
From Jim Jefferies point of view, it was another game where we didn't play properly in the first half. You need 90 minutes to make chances, 45 are not enough.
